The 10th Annual Black Greek Cookout occurred this year in Rosaryville Park in Upper Marlboro, MD and featured all members of the Divine Nine. The annual celebration is a reunion celebrating the nine major African American Sororities and Fraternities which compose the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). African American students have been trying to get sororities and fraternities from the Divine Nine here. Many college educated blacks in the United States have ties to one or more of these organizations. For many black students in America, especially those attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), being accepted into one of the most prestigious African-American fraternities and sororities – known collectively as the “Divine 9″ to those interested in black Greek life — is a momentous rite of passage. Each organization was founded and chartered by African Americans on college campuses. Thirteen women on campus have made history by chartering the first historically black sorority here at Wesley. Here is a list of the “Divine nine:”. The NPHC, also known in the African American community as “The Divine Nine,” consists of four sororities and five fraternities. The Divine Nine are the first nine historically Greek-letter African-American fraternities and sororities. Each of these fraternities and sororities is rich in history. Divine 9 The Divine Nine are a collection of African American men and woman that grouped themselves by like beliefs.
